1st Reading – Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11

Comfort, give comfort to my people,
says your God.
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated, indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins.

A voice cries out:
In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!
Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low;
the rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley.

Beloved:
The grace of God has appeared, saving all

When the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy,
He saved us through the bath of rebirth
and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for gathering us together and calling us to serve as your disciples.

Send your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish.
Give us strength, courage, and clear vision as we use our gifts to serve you.

The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom
   a light has shone.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled.

because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son.
She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.
The angel of the Lord appeared to them
and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.

“Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
For today in the city of David

Today we celebrate the Combined Rite for Acceptance into the Catechumenate and of Welcoming the Candidates.

Receiving the Candidates

Fr. Bass will greet and name those entering the catechumenate (those who seek Initiation into the Christian faith by Baptism, Confirmation, and reception of the Eucharist) and those who are Candidates for Post-Baptismal Catechesis.

The Catechumens and Candidates will declare their intent to enter to a period of preparation.
The Sponsors and all in the assembly will also be asked to support them in their journey.

The Catechumens and Candidates will receive the Sign of the Cross on their foreheads, ears, eyes, lips, chest, shoulders, hands, and feet.

The Catechumens and Candidates will then be invited into the sanctuary as mass begins.
