20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Processional Hymn - 557 - Send Down the Fire
Send down the fire of your justice,
Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit,
breathe life in your people,
and we shall be people of God.
Call us to be your compassion,
Teach us the song of your love;
Give us hearts that sing,
Give us deeds that ring,
Make us ring with the song of your love.
Send down the fire of your justice,
Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit,
breathe life in your people ,
and we shall be people of God.
Call us to learn of your mercy,
Teach us the way of your peace;
Give us hearts that feel,
Give us hands that heal,
Make us walk in the way of your peace.
Send down the fire of your justice,
Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit,
breathe life in your people ,
and we shall be people of God.
Call us to answer oppression,
Teach us the fire of your truth;
Give us righteous souls,
’Til your justice rolls,
Make us burn with the fire of your truth.
Send down the fire of your justice,
Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit,
breathe life in your people ,
and we shall be people of God.
Call us to witness your Kingdom,
Give us the presence of Christ;
May your holy light
Keep us shining bright,
Ever shine with the presence of Christ.
Send down the fire of your justice,
Send down the rains of your love;
Come, send down the Spirit,
breathe life in your people ,
and we shall be people of God.
First Reading - Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10
In those days, the princes said to the king:
“Jeremiah ought to be put to death; he is demoralizing the soldiers who are left in this city, and all the people, by speaking such things to them; he is not interested in the welfare of our people, but in their ruin.”
King Zedekiah answered: “He is in your power,” for the king could do nothing with them.
And so they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Prince Malchiah, which was in the quarters of the guard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.
Ebed-melech, a court official, went there from the palace and said to him, “My lord king, these men have been at fault in all they have done to the prophet Jeremiah, casting him into the cistern. He will die of famine on the spot, for there is no more food in the city.”
Then the king ordered Ebed-melech the Cushite to take three men along with him, and draw the prophet Jeremiah out of the cistern before he should die.
Responsorial Psalm -
Psalm 40
R. Lord, come to my aid!
I waited, I waited for the Lord,
and he stooped down to me;
he heard my cry.
R. Lord, come to my aid!
He drew me from the deadly pit,
from the miry clay.
He set my feet upon a rock,
made my footsteps firm.
R. Lord, come to my aid!
He put a new song in my mouth
praise of our God.
Many shall see and fear
and shall trust in the Lord.
R. Lord, come to my aid!
Wretched and poor though I am,
the Lord is mindful of me.
You are my rescuer, my help;
O my God, do not delay.
R. Lord, come to my aid!
Second Reading - Hebrews 12:1-4
Brothers and sisters:
Since we have been surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of our faith.
For the sake of the joy that lay before him
he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.
Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.
In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.
Gospel - Luke 12:49-53
Jesus said to his disciples:
“I have come to set the earth on fire,
and how I wish it were already blazing!
There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!
Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth?
No, I tell you, but rather division.
From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father,
a mother against her daughter
and a daughter against her mother,
a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
Prayer for Our Lady of Angels Parish
Heavenly Father, we thank you for gathering us together and calling us to serve as your disciples.
You have charged us through your Son, Jesus, with the great mission of evangelizing and witnessing your love to the world.
Send your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish.
Give us strength, courage, and clear vision as we use our gifts to serve you.
We entrust our parish family to the care of Mary, our mother, and ask for her intercession and guidance, as we strive to build a parish that loves God, embraces all people, and shares the Gospel joyfully.
Offertory Hymn - 628 - You, Lord, Are Both Lamb and Shepherd
You, Lord, are both Lamb and Shepherd,
You, Lord, are both prince and slave.
You, peacemaker and swordbringer
Of the way you took and gave.
You, the everlasting instant;
You, whom we both scorn and crave.
Clothed in light upon a mountain,
Stripped of might upon the cross.
Shining in eternal glory,
Beggar’d by a soldier’s toss.
You, the everlasting instant;
You, who are both gift and cost.
You, who walk each day beside us,
Sit in power at God’s side.
You, who preach a way that’s narrow,
Have a love that reaches wide.
You, the everlasting instant;
You, who are our pilgrim guide.
Worthy is our earthly Jesus!
Worthy is our cosmic Christ!
Worthy your defeat and vict’ry.
Worthy still your peace and strife.
You, the everlasting instant;
You, who are our death and life.
Communion Hymn - 932 - One Bread, One Body
One bread, one body,
One Lord of all,
One cup of blessing which we bless.
And we, though many,
throughout the earth,
we are one body in this one Lord.
Gentile or Jew,
servant or free,
woman or man, no more.
One bread, one body,
One Lord of all,
One cup of blessing which we bless.
And we, though many,
throughout the earth,
we are one body in this one Lord.
Many the gifts,
many the works,
one in the Lord of all.
One bread, one body,
One Lord of all,
One cup of blessing which we bless.
And we, though many,
throughout the earth,
we are one body in this one Lord.
Grain for the fields,
scattered and grown,
gathered to one for all.
One bread, one body,
One Lord of all,
One cup of blessing which we bless.
And we, though many,
throughout the earth,
we are one body in this one Lord.
Recessional Hymn - 879 - Hail, Holy Queen
Hail, Holy Queen enthroned above,
O Maria.
Hail, Queen of mercy and of love,
O Maria.
Triumph, all ye Cherubim;
Sing with us, ye Seraphim.
Heav’n and earth resound the hymn:
Salve, Salve, Salve Regina.
The cause of joy to all below,
O Maria.
The spring though which all graces flow,
O Maria.
Angels, all your praises bring;
Earth and heaven, with us sing;
All creation echoing:
Salve, Salve, Salve Regina.
O gentle, loving, holy one,
O Maria.
The God of light became your Son,
O Maria.
Triumph all ye Cherubim;
Sing with us, ye Seraphim.
Heav’n and earth resound the hymn;
Salve, Salve, Salve Regina.
