Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Processional Hymn - 598 - O God Beyond All Praising
O God beyond all praising,
We worship you today
And sing the love amazing
That songs cannot repay;
For we can only wonder
At every gift you send,
At blessings without number
And mercies without end:
We lift our hearts before you
And wait upon your word,
We honor and adore you,
Our great and mighty Lord.
The flower of earthly splendor
In time must surely die,
Its fragile bloom surrender
To you, the Lord most high;
But hidden from all nature
Th'eternal seed is sown--
Though small in mortal stature,
To heaven's garden grown:
For Christ the man from heaven
From death has set us free,
And we through him are given
The final victory!
Then hear, O gracious Savior,
Accept the love we bring,
That we who know your favor
May serve you as our king;
And whether our tomorrows
Be filled with good or ill,
We'll triumph through our sorrows
And rise to bless you still:
To marvel at your beauty
And glory in your ways,
And make a joyful duty
Our sacrifice of praise.
First Reading - Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23
Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities! All things are vanity!
Here is one who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and yet to another who has not labored over it, he must leave property.
This also is vanity and a great misfortune.
For what profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun?
All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest.
This also is vanity.
Responsorial Psalm - Psalm 90
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
You turn man back to dust, and say, “Return, O children of men.”
To your eyes a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone, or like a watch in the night.
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
You sweep them away like a dream, like grass that springs up in the morning.
In the morning it sprouts and is fresh; by evening it withers and fades.
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Then teach us to number our days, that we may gain wisdom of heart.
Turn back, O LORD! How long?
Show pity to your servants!
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
At dawn, fill us with your merciful love, we shall exult and rejoice all our days.
Let the favor of the LORD our God be upon us; give success to the work of our hands.
O give success to the work of our hands.
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Second Reading - Colossians 3:1-5,9-11
Brothers and sisters:
If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.
Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry.
Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator.
Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.
Gospel - Luke 12:13-21
Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.”
He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?”
Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”
Then he told them a parable.
“There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest.
“He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’
“And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones.
‘There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’
“But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’
“Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”
Prayer for Our Lady of Angels Parish
Heavenly Father, we thank you for gathering us together and calling us to serve as your disciples.
You have charged us through your Son, Jesus, with the great mission of evangelizing and witnessing your love to the world.
Send your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish.
Give us strength, courage, and clear vision as we use our gifts to serve you.
We entrust our parish family to the care of Mary, our mother, and ask for her intercession and guidance, as we strive to build a parish that loves God, embraces all people, and shares the Gospel joyfully.
Offertory Hymn - 716 - In Every Age
Long before the mountains came to be
And the land and sea and stars of the night,
Through the endless seasons of all time,
You have always been, you will always be.
In ev’ry age, O God, you have been our refuge.
In ev’ry age, O God, you have been our hope.
Destiny is cast, and at your silent word
We return to dust and scatter to the wind.
A thousand years are like a single moment gone,
As the light that fades at the end of day.
In ev’ry age, O God, you have been our refuge.
In ev’ry age, O God, you have been our hope.
Teach us to make use of the time we have.
Teach us to be patient even as we wait.
Teach us to embrace our ev’ry joy and pain.
To sleep peacefully, and to rise up strong.
In ev’ry age, O God, you have been our refuge.
In ev’ry age, O God, you have been our hope.
You have been our refuge.
You have been our hope.
Communion Hymn - 728 - Eye Has Not Seen
Eye has not seen, ear has not heard what God has ready for those who love him;
Spirit of love, come, give us the mind of Jesus, Teach us the wisdom of God.
When pain and sorrow weigh us down, be near to us, O Lord,
Forgive the weakness of our faith, and bear us up within your peaceful word.
Eye has not seen, ear has not heard what God has ready for those who love him;
Spirit of love, come, give us the mind of Jesus, Teach us the wisdom of God.
Our lives are but a single breath, we flower and we fade,
Yet all our days are in your hands, so we return in love what love has made.
Eye has not seen, ear has not heard what God has ready for those who love him;
Spirit of love, come, give us the mind of Jesus, Teach us the wisdom of God.
To those who see with eyes of faith, the Lord is ever near,
Reflected in the faces of all the poor and lowly of the world.
Eye has not seen, ear has not heard what God has ready for those who love him;
Spirit of love, come, give us the mind of Jesus, Teach us the wisdom of God.
We sing a mystery from the past in halls where saints have trod,
Yet ever new the music rings to Jesus, Living Song of God.
Eye has not seen, ear has not heard what God has ready for those who love him;
Spirit of love, come, give us the mind of Jesus, Teach us the wisdom of God.
Recessional Hymn - 641 - Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heaven, to earth come down,
Fix in us your humble dwelling,
All your faithful mercies crown.
Jesus source of all compassion,
Love unbounded, love all pure;
Visit us with your salvation,
Let your love in us endure.
Come, Almighty to deliver,
Let us all your life receive;
Suddenly return, and never,
Nevermore your temples leave.
You we would be always blessing,
Serve you as your hosts above,
Pray, and praise you without ceasing,
Glory in your precious love.
Finish then your new creation;
Pure and spotless, gracious Lord;
Let us see your great salvation,
Perfectly in you restored.
Changed from glory into glory
Till in heaven, we take our place,
Till we sing before the Almighty,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise!
