Processional Hymn - 859 - God of Day and God of Darkness

  1. God of day and God of darkness,
Now we stand before the night.
As the shadows stretch and deepen,
Come and make our darkness bright.
    All creation still is groaning
For the dawning of your might.
When the Sun of peace and justice
Fills the earth with radiant light.

  2. Still the nations curse the darkness,
Still the rich oppress the poor.
Still the earth is bruised and broken
By the ones who still want more.
Come and wake us from our sleeping,
    So our hearts cannot ignore
All your people lost and broken,
All your children at our door.

  3. You shall be the path that guides us;
You the light that in us burns.
    Shining deep within all people,
Yours the love that we must learn.
For our hearts shall wander restless
'Til they safe to you return.
    Finding you in one another,
We shall all your face discern.

  4. Praise to you in day and darkness,
    You our source and you are end;
Praise to you who love and nurture
    As a father, mother, friend.
Grant us all a peaceful resting,
Let each mind and body mend,
    So we rise refreshed tomorrow,
    Hearts renewed to kingdom tend.

Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
We glorify you,
We give you thanks for your great glory.
Lord God, heavenly king,
O God, Almighty Father.

Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Lord, Jesus Christ,
Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
You take away the sins of the world,
Have mercy on us.
You take away the sins of the world,
Receive our prayer;
You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!

For you alone are the Holy One,
You alone are the Lord,
You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,

First Reading - Wisdom 2:12, 17-20

The wicked say:
Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, reproaches us for transgressions of the law, and charges us with violations of our training.
Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him.
For if the just one be the son of God, God will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes.
With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience.
Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him.

The Word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm -Psalm 54

R. The LORD upholds my life. The LORD upholds my life.

O God, by your name, save me, and by your might defend my cause.
O God, hear my prayer; hearken to the words of my mouth.
R. The LORD upholds my life. The LORD upholds my life.

For the haughty men have risen up against me, the ruthless seek my life;
They set not God before their eyes; they set not God before their eyes.
R. The LORD upholds my life. The LORD upholds my life.

Behold, God is my helper; the LORD sustains my life.
Freely will I offer you sacrifice; I will praise your name, O LORD, for its goodness.
R. The LORD upholds my life. The LORD upholds my life.

Second Reading -
James 3:16-4:3

Beloved:
Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice.
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits,
without inconstancy or insincerity.
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace.

Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from?
Is it not from your passions that make war within your members?
You covet but do not possess.
You kill and envy but you cannot obtain; you fight and wage war.
You do not possess because you do not ask.
You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions

The Word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

R: Alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia, alleluia!

God has called us through the Gospel
to posses the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

R: Alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia, alleluia!

Gospel -
Mark 9:30-37

Priest or Deacon: The Lord be with you.
ALL: And with your spirit.

Priest/Deacon: A reading from the Gospel according to Mark.
ALL: Glory to you, O Lord (while make a small sign of the Cross on the forehead, lips, and chest).

Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish anyone to know about it.
He was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.”
But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.

They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”
But they remained silent.
They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest.
Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”
Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

ALL: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily (please sit)

Nicene Creed (please stand)

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

General Intercessions:

After each prayer, respond: Lord, hear our prayer.

Prayer for Our Lady of Angels Parish

Heavenly Father, we thank you for gathering us together and calling us to serve as your disciples.
You have charged us through your Son, Jesus, with the great mission of evangelizing and witnessing your love to the world.
Send your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish.
Give us strength, courage, and clear vision as we use our gifts to serve you.
We entrust our parish family to the care of Mary, our mother, and ask for her intercession and guidance, as we strive to build a parish that loves God, embraces all people, and shares the Gospel joyfully.

Offertory Song - 717 - Shelter Me, O God

Shelter me, O God;
hide me in the shadow of your wings.
You alone are my hope.

  1. When my foes surround me,
set me high above their reach.
Hear me when I call your name.

  2. As a mother gathers
    her young beneath her care,
    gather me into your arms.

  3. Though I walk in darkness,
through the needle's eye of death,
you will never leave my side.

Communion Hymn - 935 - Draw Near

Draw near, draw near!
Take the Body of your Lord.
Draw near, draw near!
Drink the Blood for you outpoured.

  1. Draw near and take
    the Body of the Lord,
    and drink with faith
    the Blood for you outpoured.
    Saved by Christ’s Body
    and his holy Blood,
    with souls refreshed
we give our thanks to God.

  2. Christ our Redeemer,
    God’s eternal Son,
has by his cross and blood
    the vict’ry won.
He spent his life for greatest
    and for least.
    Praise Christ the Paschal Victim,
    Christ the Priest.

  3. Let us approach
    with faithful hearts sincere
and claim the promise of salvation here.
    Christ rules our hearts,
    and all his saints defends;
he gives believers life that never ends.

  4. With heav’nly bread
    Christ makes the hungry whole;
his living water fills the thirsting soul.
Alpha-Omega, unto whom shall bow all nations of the earth,
    be with us now.

Recessional Hymn - 859 - Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service

  1. Lord, whose love in humble service
Bore the weight of human need,
    Who upon the cross, forsaken,
    Offered mercy’s perfect deed:
We, your servants, bring the worship
Not of voice alone, but heart,
    Consecrating to your purpose
    Ev’ry gift that you impart.

  2. Still the children wander homeless;
    Still the hungry cry for bread;
    Still the captives long for freedom;
Still in grief, we mourn our dead.
As you, Lord, in deep compassion
Healed the sick and freed the soul,
Use the love your Spirit kindles
Still to save and make us whole.

  3. As we worship, grant us vision,
    Till your love’s revealing light
In its height and depth and greatness
    Dawns upon our human sight,
Making known the needs and burdens
    Your compassion bids us bear,
    Stirring us to ardent service,
    Your abundant life to share.

  4. Called from worship into service,
Forth in your great name we go
To the child, the youth, the aged,
Love in living deeds to show.
Hope and health, goodwill and comfort,
Counsel, aid, and peace we give,
That your children, Lord, in freedom
May your mercy know and live.
