Third Sunday of Advent
Processional Hymn - Advent Entrance Hymn, Week 3
The Advent Entrance hymn combines the Entrance Antiphon for the day with two verses of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.”
(cantor) Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice, rejoice! Rejoice in the Lord always!
(all) O come, O key of David come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to you Israel.
(cantor) Again I say rejoice!
Indeed, the Lord is near!
(all) O come, O Dayspring from on high,
And cheer us by your drawing nigh,
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadow put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel.
Kyrie (sung)

You were sent to heal the contrite of heart.
Lord, have mercy.
ALL: Lord, have Mercy.
(cantor)
You came to call, you came to call sinners. Christ, have mercy.
ALL: Christ, have mercy.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us.
Lord, have mercy.
ALL: Lord, have mercy.

1st Reading – Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11
The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the LORD and a day of vindication by our God.
I rejoice heartily in the LORD, in my God is the joy of my soul; for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation and wrapped me in a mantle of justice, like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with her jewels.
As the earth brings forth its plants, and a garden makes its growth spring up, so will the Lord GOD make justice and praise spring up before all the nations.
The Word of the Lord.
ALL: THANKS BE TO GOD.
Responsorial Psalm -
Luke 1
R. My soul rejoices in my God, my soul rejoices in my God.
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked upon his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
R. My soul rejoices in my God, my soul rejoices in my God.
The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.
R. My soul rejoices in my God, my soul rejoices in my God.
He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy.
R. My soul rejoices in my God, my soul rejoices in my God.
Second Reading - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.
In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.
Do not quench the Spirit.
Do not despise prophetic utterances.
Test everything; retain what is good.
Refrain from every kind of evil.
May the God of peace make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The one who calls you is faithful, and he will also accomplish it.
The Word of the Lord.
ALL: THANKS BE TO GOD.
Gospel Acclamation -
cantor: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
ALL: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
cantor: Make straight the way of the Lord,
Make straight his paths.
All flesh shall see the salvation of God.
ALL: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Gospel -
John 1:6-8, 19-28
Priest or Deacon: The Lord be with you.
ALL: And with your spirit.
Priest/Deacon: A reading from the Gospel according to John.
ALL: Glory to you, O Lord (while make a small sign of the Cross on the forehead, lips, and chest).
A man named John was sent from God.
He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.
He was not the light, but came to testify to the light.
And this is the testimony of John.
When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to him to ask him, “Who are you?”
He admitted and did not deny it, but admitted, “I am not the Christ.”
So they asked him, “What are you then? Are you Elijah?”
And he said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”
He answered, “No.”
So they said to him, “Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us?
“What do you have to say for yourself?”
He said: “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘make straight the way of the Lord,’” as Isaiah the prophet said.”
Some Pharisees were also sent.
They asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?”
John answered them, “I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.”
This happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The Gospel of the Lord.
ALL: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Homily (please sit)
Nicene Creed (please stand)
I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
General Intercessions:
After each prayer, respond: Lord, hear our prayer.
Prayer for Our Lady of Angels Parish
Heavenly Father, we thank you for gathering us together and calling us to serve as your disciples.
You have charged us through your Son, Jesus, with the great mission of evangelizing and witnessing your love to the world.
Send your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish.
Give us strength, courage, and clear vision as we use our gifts to serve you.
We entrust our parish family to the care of Mary, our mother, and ask for her intercession and guidance, as we strive to build a parish that loves God, embraces all people, and shares the Gospel joyfully.

Communion Hymn - 415 - My Soul in Stillness Waits
The “O Antiphons” are sung the last seven days before Christmas, from Dec. 17-23, at Evening Prayer. Each day a different antiphon is sung, invoking a different title for the Messiah. Each invocation begins with the word “O,” hence the title “O Antiphons.” Since Dec. 17 occurs on a Sunday this year, it is very timely to sing this modern take on the “O Antiphons” today, Dec. 17, on the first day of the “O Antiphons.”
For you, O Lord, my soul in stillness waits. Truly my hope is in you.
O Lord of Light, our only hope of glory, your radiance shines in all who look to you.
Come light the hearts of all in dark and shadow.
For you, O Lord, my soul in stillness waits. Truly my hope is in you.
O Spring of Joy, rain down upon our spirits. Our thirsty hearts are yearning for your Word.
Come, make us whole; be comfort to our hearts.
For you, O Lord, my soul in stillness waits. Truly my hope is in you.
O Root of Life, implant your seed within us, and in your advent draw us all to you,
Our hope reborn in dying and in rising.
For you, O Lord, my soul in stillness waits. Truly my hope is in you.
O Key of Knowledge, guide us in our pilgrimage, we ever seek, yet unfulfilled remain.
Open to us the pathway of your peace.
For you, O Lord, my soul in stillness waits. Truly my hope is in you.
Come, let us bow before the God who made us.
Let every heart be opened to the Lord, for we are all the people of his hand.
For you, O Lord, my soul in stillness waits. Truly my hope is in you.
Here we shall meet the makers of the heavens, creator of the mountains and the seas,
Lord of the stars and present to us now.
For you, O Lord, my soul in stillness waits. Truly my hope is in you.
Recessional - 409 - People, Look East
People, look East. The time is near
Of the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able,
Trim the hearth and set the table.
People, look East and sing today -
Love, the Guest, is on the way.
Furrows be glad. Though earth is bare,
One more seed is planted there.
Give up your strength the seed to nourish,
That in course the flow’r may flourish.
People, look East and sing today -
Love, the Rose, is one the way.
Birds, though you long
have ceased to build,
Guard the nest that must be filled.
Even the hour when wings are frozen
God for fledging time has chosen.
People, look East and sing today -
Love, the Bird, is on the way.
Stars, keep the watch when night is dim.
One more light the bowl shall bring,
Shining beyond the frosty weather,
Bright as sun and moon together.
People, look East and sing today -
Love, the Star is on the way.
Angels announce with shouts of mirth
Him who brings new life to earth.
Set ev’ry peak and valley humming
With the word, the Lord is coming.
People, look East and sing today -
Love, the Lord, is on the way.
