Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Processional Hymn - Lord, Today (#464, v. 2-5)
Lord, today we have seen your glory,
dawn follows the night.
We, your people who walked in darkness
now have seen a great light.
The Lord is king, the nations rejoice,
let all God’s people be glad.
The heavens proclaim justice for all.
Glory has filled the land.
Lord, today we have seen your glory,
dawn follows the night.
We, your people who walked in darkness
now have seen a great light.
O Bethlehem, you are from of old,
too small among Judah’s clans.
From you shall come a ruler this day,
shepherd to guide the land.
Lord, today we have seen your glory,
dawn follows the night.
We, your people who walked in darkness
now have seen a great light.
The days will come, the Lord promised us,
when God would raise up a shoot
to rule the land, reign as a king,
whose name is Lord the Just.
Lord, today we have seen your glory,
dawn follows the night.
We, your people who walked in darkness
now have seen a great light.
New light has dawned upon all the just,
gladness for upright of heart.
Rejoice in the Lord, your faithful ones.
Give thanks to God’s great name.
Lord, today we have seen your glory,
dawn follows the night.
We, your people who walked in darkness
now have seen a great light.
1st Reading – Isaiah 8:23-9:3
First the Lord degraded the land of Zebulun
and the land of Naphtali;
but in the end he has glorified the seaward road,
the land west of the Jordan,
the District of the Gentiles.
Anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness:
for there is no gloom where but now there was distress.
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom
a light has shone.
You have brought them abundant joy
and great rejoicing,
as they rejoice before you as at the harvest,
as people make merry when dividing spoils.
For the yoke that burdened them,
the pole on their shoulder,
and the rod of their taskmaster
you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.
Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 27
R. The Lord is my light, the Lord is my light, the Lord is my light and my salvation.
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
if God is my help whom should I fear?
The LORD is my refuge, my stronghold and my strength,
why should I be afraid?
R. The Lord is my light, the Lord is my light, the Lord is my light and my salvation.
There is but one thing that I want:
to live in the dwelling place of God;
to look all my days on the beauty of the Lord,
and contemplate God’s holy temple.
R. The Lord is my light, the Lord is my light, the Lord is my light and my salvation.
I shall see for myself the grace of God,
the dawn of that day among the living.
Wait for the Lord, find strength in your hearts;
have courage and wait for God.
R. The Lord is my light, the Lord is my light, the Lord is my light and my salvation.
2nd Reading – 1 Cor. 1:10-13, 17
I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that all of you agree in what you say,
and that there be no divisions among you,
but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose.
For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers and sisters,
by Chloe’s people, that there are rivalries among you.
I mean that each of you is saying,
“I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,”
or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.”
Is Christ divided?
Was Paul crucified for you?
Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel,
and not with the wisdom of human eloquence,
so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning.
Gospel – Matthew 4:12-23
When Jesus heard that John had been arrested,
he withdrew to Galilee.
He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea,
in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet
might be fulfilled:
Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles,
the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light,
on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death
light has arisen.
From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say,
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them,
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
At once they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets.
He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.
He went around all of Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people.
Prayer for Our Lady of Angels Parish
Heavenly Father, we thank you for gathering us together and calling us to serve as your disciples.
You have charged us through your Son, Jesus, with the great mission of evangelizing and witnessing your love to the world.
Send your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish.
Give us strength, courage, and clear vision as we use our gifts to serve you.
We entrust our parish family to the care of Mary, our mother, and ask for her intercession and guidance, as we strive to build a parish that loves God, embraces all people, and shares the Gospel joyfully.
Amen.
Offertory Song - The Summons
Will you come and follow me
If I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know
And never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
Will you let my name be known,
Will you let my life be grown
In you and you in me?
Will you leave yourself behind
If I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind
And never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare
Should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer
In you and you in me?
Will you let the blinded see
If I but call your name?
Will you set the pris’ners free
And never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean,
And do such as this unseen,
And admit to what I mean
In you and you in me?
Will you love the ‘you’ you hide
If I but call your name?
Will you quell that fear inside
And never be the same?
Will you use the faith you've found
To reshape the world around,
Through my sight and touch and sound
In you and you in me?
Lord, your summons echoes true
When you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you
And never be the same.
In your company, I'll go
Where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow
In you, and you in me.
Communion Song -
Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness
Opened my eyes, let me see
Beauty that made
This heart adore You
Hope of a life spent with You
Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me
King of all days
Oh so highly exalted
Glorious in heaven above
Humbly You came
To the earth You created
All for love's sake became poor
And I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
And I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
Recessional Song - Small Things with Great Love
We can do small things with great love;
we can serve those in need of us.
We can be His hands and His feet.
We can be the face that they meet.
We can be the light of Christ to the world.
We’ve got to love one another,
sisters and brothers,
sharing God’s love to the world!
We can do small things with great love;
we can serve those in need of us.
We can be His hands and His feet.
We can be the face that they meet.
We can be the light of Christ to the world.
With ev’rything that you do,
let love flow through;
you’ll be God’s heart to the world!
We can do small things with great love;
we can serve those in need of us.
We can be His hands and His feet.
We can be the face that they meet.
We can be the light of Christ to the world.
Go forth to love and to serve,
sharing the Word;
bringing God’s hope to the world!
We can do small things with great love;
we can serve those in need of us.
We can be His hands and His feet.
We can be the face that they meet.
We can be the light of Christ to the world.
We can be the light of Christ to the world!
