First Sunday of Advent

Processional Hymn - Advent Entrance Hymn, Week 1

(cantor) To you, I lift up my soul,
O my God.
In you, I have trusted.
Let me not be put to shame.

(all) O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel.

(cantor) Let not my enemies
rejoice over me,
And let none who hope in You,
be put to shame.

(all) O come, O Wisdom from on high,
Who orders all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel.

First Reading -
Isaiah 2:1-5

This is what Isaiah, son of Amoz,
saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
In days to come, the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established as the highest mountain
and raised above the hills.
All nations shall stream toward it;
many peoples shall come and say:
"Come, let us climb the LORD's mountain,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may instruct us in his ways,
and we may walk in his paths."
For from Zion shall go forth instruction,
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations,
and impose terms on many peoples.
They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again.
O house of Jacob, come,
let us walk in the light of the Lord!

Responsorial Psalm -
Psalm 122

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

I rejoiced when I heard them say,
"Let us go to the house of the LORD."
And now our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.
R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

Jerusalem is a city
built with strength and unity.
There the tribes will go up,
the tribes of the LORD.

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
The decree of Israel
is to give thanks to the name of the LORD.
There the judgment seats are set,
seats for the house of David.

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!
May those who love you prosper!
May peace be within your walls,
prosperity in your buildings.

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
Because of those I love,
I say, "Peace be within you!"
Because of the house of the LORD,
I will pray for your good.
R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

Second Reading - Romans 13:11-14

Brothers and sisters:
You know the time;
it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed;
the night is advanced, the day is at hand.
Let us then throw off the works of darkness
and put on the armor of light;
let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day, not in orgies and drunkenness,
not in promiscuity and lust,
not in rivalry and jealousy.
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ,
and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.

Gospel -
Matthew 24:37-44

Jesus said to his disciples:
"As it was in the days of Noah,
so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
In those days before the flood,
they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage,
up to the day that Noah entered the ark.
They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away.
So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man.
Two men will be out in the field;
one will be taken, and one will be left.
Two women will be grinding at the mill;
one will be taken, and one will be left.
Therefore, stay awake!
For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.
Be sure of this: if the master of the house
had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake
and not let his house be broken into.
So too, you also must be prepared,
for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come."

Prayer for Our Lady of Angels Parish

Heavenly Father, we thank you for gathering us together and calling us to serve as your disciples.
You have charged us through your Son, Jesus, with the great mission of evangelizing and witnessing your love to the world.
Send your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish.
Give us strength, courage, and clear vision as we use our gifts to serve you.
We entrust our parish family to the care of Mary, our mother, and ask for her intercession and guidance, as we strive to build a parish that loves God, embraces all people, and shares the Gospel joyfully.

Offertory Hymn - 414 - The King Shall Come

The King shall come when morning dawns
And light triumphant breaks,
When beauty gilds the eastern hills,
And life to joy awakes.

Not as of old, a little child
To bear, and fight, and die,
But crowned with glory like the sun
That lights the morning sky.

The King shall come when morning dawns
And earth’s dark night is passed,
O haste the rising of the morn,
Whose day shall ever last.

And let the endless bliss begin,
By weary saints foretold,
When right shall triumph over wrong,
And truth shall be extolled.

The King shall come when morning dawns,
And light and beauty brings;
“Hail, Christ the Lord!” Your people pray,
“Come quickly, King of kings!”

Communion Hymn - 937 - Now in this Banquet (Advent refrain)

God of our journeys, daybreak to night;
Lead us to justice and light.
Grant us compassion, strength for the day;
Wisdom to walk in your way.

You who have touched us and graced us with love,
Make us your people of goodness and light.

God of our journeys, daybreak to night;
Lead us to justice and light.
Grant us compassion, strength for the day;
Wisdom to walk in your way.

Let our hearts burn with the fire of your love;
Open our eyes to the glory of God.

God of our journeys, daybreak to night;
Lead us to justice and light.
Grant us compassion, strength for the day;
Wisdom to walk in your way.

God who makes the blind to see, God who
Makes the lame to walk, bring us dancing into day,
Lead your people in your way.

God of our journeys, daybreak to night;
Lead us to justice and light.
Grant us compassion, strength for the day;
Wisdom to walk in your way.

Hope for the hopeless
light for the blind;
“Strong” is your name, Lord,
“Gentle” and “kind.”

God of our journeys, daybreak to night;
Lead us to justice and light.
Grant us compassion, strength for the day;
Wisdom to walk in your way.

Call us to be your light
call us to be your love,
make us your people again.

God of our journeys, daybreak to night;
Lead us to justice and light.
Grant us compassion, strength for the day;
Wisdom to walk in your way.

Come, O Spirit! renew our hearts!
We shall arise to be children of light.

God of our journeys, daybreak to night;
Lead us to justice and light.
Grant us compassion, strength for the day;
Wisdom to walk in your way.

Recessional - 766 - City of God

Awake from your slumber
Arise from your sleep
A new day is dawning
For all those who weep

The people in darkness
Have seen a great light
The lord of our longing
Has conquered the night

Let us build the city of God
May our tears
Be turned into dancing
For the lord
Our light and our love
Has turned the night into day

We are sons of the morning,
We are daughters of day.
The one who has loved us
Has brightened our way.

The lord of all kindness
Has called us to be
A light for his people
To set their hearts free.

Let us build the city of God
May our tears
Be turned into dancing
For the lord
Our light and our love
Has turned the night into day
