Mass Vespers and Stations
The Friday of the 5th Week of Lent
Entrance Antiphon:
U: Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress. Deliver me from the hands of my enemies and those who pursue me. O Lord, let me never be put to shame, for I call on you.
The psalm and canticles recitation will alternate between the presider’s side (I) and the ambo side (II). The Mass antiphons, the ending antiphons, and the Magnificat will be said in unison (U).
L: Lord, lay your healing hand upon me, for I have sinned.
Psalm 41
I: Happy the man who considers the poor and the weak.
The LORD will save him in the day of evil,
will guard him, give him life, make him happy in the land and will not give him up to the will of his foes.
The LORD will help him on his bed of pain,
he will bring him back from sickness to health.
II: As for me, I said: “LORD, have mercy on me;
heal my soul for I have sinned against you.”
My foes are speaking evil against me.
“How long before he dies and his name be forgotten?”
I: They come to visit me and speak empty words,
their hearts full of malice, they spread it abroad.
II: My enemies whisper together against me.
They all weigh up the evil which is on me:
“Some deadly thing has fastened upon him,
he will not rise again from where he lies.”
Thus even my friend, in whom I trusted,
who ate my bread, has turned against me.
I: But you, O LORD, have mercy on me.
Let me rise once more and I will repay them.
By this I shall know that you are my friend,
If my foes do not shout in triumph over me.
If you uphold me I shall be unharmed
and set in your presence for evermore.
II: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel
from age to age. Amen. Amen.
I: Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
II: as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
U: Lord, lay your healing hand upon me, for I have sinned.
L: The mighty Lord is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
Psalm 46
I: God is for us a refuge and strength,
a helper close at hand, in time of distress:
so we shall not fear though the earth should rock,
though the mountains fall into the depths of the sea,
even though its waters rage and foam,
even though the mountains be shaken by its
waves.
II: The LORD of hosts is with us:
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
I: The waters of a river give joy to God’s city,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within, it cannot be shaken;
God will help it at the dawning of the day.
Nations are in tumult, kingdoms are shaken:
He lifts his voice, the earth shrinks away.
II: The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
I: Come, consider the works of the LORD,
the redoubtable deeds he has done on earth.
He puts an end to wars over all the earth;
the bow he breaks, the spear he snaps.
He burns the shields with fire.
II: “Be still and know that I am God,
supreme among the nations, supreme on the earth!”
The LORD of hosts is with us:
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
I: Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
II: as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
U: The mighty Lord is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
L: All nations will come and worship before you, O Lord.
Canticle (Revelation 15: 3-4)
I: Mighty and wonderful are your works,
Lord God almighty!
Righteous and true are your ways,
O King of the nations.
II: Who would dare refuse you honor,
Or the glory due your name, O Lord?
I: Since you alone are holy,
all the nations shall come
and worship in your presence.
Your mighty deeds are clearly seen.
II: Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
I: as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
U: All nations will come and worship before you, O Lord.
The Mass continues as normal.
Responsorial Psalm:
U: In my distress I called upon the Lord, and he heard my voice.
Communion Antiphon:
U:Jesus bore our sins in his own body on the cross, so that dead to sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds we have been healed.
L: Even if you have no faith in my words, you should at least believe the
evidence of the works I do in God’s name.
U: +My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
my spirit rejoices in God my savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
He has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
For he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his children forever.
U: Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
U: Even if you have no faith in my words, you
should at least believe the evidence of the works I do in God’s name.
Blessing and Dismissal
Traditional Stations of the Cross
Opening Prayer
Leader: Jesus came with his disciples to a country place called Gethsemani, and he said to them, “Sit down here, while I go over yonder and pray.” Then he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and he began to be saddened and exceedingly troubled. He said to them, “My soul is sad, even unto death. Wait here and watch with me.” He went forward a little, and falling prostrate he prayed, saying, “Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; yet not as I will but as you will.”
All: Almighty and eternal Father, accept our prayer of thanksgiving for your Beloved Son, our Savior, and Lord. As we recall his sacred passion, send the Spirit of Christ into our hearts, we beg You, so that whether we pray or work we might do all in union with Christ our Redeemer.
Amen.
First Station
Leader: The First Station: Jesus prays in the Garden of Olives
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: Again the high priest began to ask him, and said to him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the blessed One?” And Jesus said to him, “I am. And you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” But the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further need have we of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” And they all condemned him as liable to death.
Reader 2: The kings of the earth rise up, and the princes conspire together against the Lord and against his Anointed. I will proclaim the decree of the Lord. The Lord said to me: “You are my Son; this day I have begotten you. Ask of me and I will give you the nations for an inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession.”
Leader: Let us pray:
All: All powerful and eternal God, for proclaiming the truth, your Son, Jesus Christ, is condemned to death by crucifixion. Stir up your love in our hearts so that we might be ever faithful to all that you have told us and fear nothing more than the loss of your friendship through sin.
Amen.
All sing:
Jesus, Lord, condemned, defiled,
May we too be meek and mild
As we tread your holy Way.
Second Station
Leader: The Second Station: Jesus carries his cross
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: And Pilate said to the Jews, “Behold, your king!” But they cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. And so they took Jesus and led him away, bearing the cross for himself.
Reader 2: Who would believe what we have heard? To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? He grew up like a sapling before him, like a shoot from the parched earth; there was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him, no appearance that would attract us to him. He was rejected and avoided by men, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity, one of those from whom men turn away, and we held him in no esteem.
Leader: Let us pray.
All: Father in heaven, your Son, Jesus Christ, still carries his Cross in his persecuted brothers and sisters throughout the world. Make us feel the needs of all persons, so that we might as readily help them as we would help Jesus himself.
Amen.
All sing:
Now the Cross as Jesus bore it,
Has become for us who share it,
The jeweled Cross of Victory.
Third Station
Leader: Third Station: Jesus falls the first me
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before you. If you were of the world, the world would love what is its own. Because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I have spoken to you: “No servant is greater than his master.” If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you also.
Reader 2: Why are your clothes red, and your garments like those of the wine presser? “The wine press I have trodden alone, and of my people there was no one with me. I trod them in my anger, and trampled them down in my wrath. I looked about, but there was no one to help. I was appalled that there was no one to lend support; so my own arm brought about the victory.”
Leader: Let us pray:
All: O God, to free us from sin and weakness your Son, Jesus Christ, embraced his fearful passion and crucifixion. Strengthen us in our baptismal resolutions by which we renounced sin and Satan, so that, through the passion of this life’s sufferings, we might rise to a new life of joyful service, free of all selfishness.
Amen.
All sing:
Weakened, prodded, cursed, and fallen,
His whole Body bruised and swollen,
Jesus tripped and lay in pain.
Fourth Station
Leader: The Fourth Station: Jesus meets his mother
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: Now there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus, therefore, saw his mother and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
Reader 2: To what can I compare you, O daughter Jerusalem? What example can I show you for your comfort, virgin daughter Sion? For great as the sea is your distress; who can heal you?
Leader: Let us pray:
All: O blessed Lord, at your passion, a sword of sorrow pierced the loving heart of your mother, as Simeon had foretold. Grant that we who look back on her sorrows with compassion might receive the healing fruits of your sufferings.
Amen.
All sing:
At the cross her station on keeping,
Mary stood in sorrow, weeping,
When her Son was crucified.
Fifth Station
Leader: The Fifth Station: Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: And when they had mocked Jesus, they took the purple cloak off and put his own clothes on him, and they led him out to be crucified. Then they forced a certain passer‐by, Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, to take up his cross. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha, a name meaning “the place of the skull”.
Reader 2: With a loud voice I cry out to the Lord; with a loud voice I beseech the Lord. My complaint I pour out before him; before him I lay bare my distress. When my spirit is faint within me, you know my path. In the way along which I walk they have hid a trap for me. I look to the right to see, but there is no one who pays me heed. I have lost all means of escape; there is no one who cares for my life.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus Christ, help us to see in the sufferings and shortcomings of our lives a share in your cross; strengthen and console us in the belief that we bear all things in union with you, who have taken upon yourself even our guilt.
Amen.
All sing:
Simon stopped in hesitation,
Not foreseeing his proud station on,
Called to bear the Cross of Christ
Sixth Station
Leader: The Sixth Station: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you, or thirsty, and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger, and take you in, or naked, and clothe you? Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you? And, answering, the king will say to them, “Amen, I say to you, as long as you did it for one of these, the least of my brethren, you did it for me.”
Reader 2: A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure. A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can balance his worth. A faithful friend is a life‐saving remedy, such as he who fears God finds; for he who fears God behaves accordingly, and his friend will be like himself.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Almighty and ever‐loving God, we feel your love and understanding in the consolation and support we receive from one another. Give us, we beg you, the courage and dedication to sacrifice and suffer with those who are in need, the least of your people.
Amen.
All sing:
Brave but trembling came the woman,
None but she would flaunt the Roman,
Moved by love beyond her fear.
Seventh Station
Leader: The Seventh Station: Jesus falls the second time.
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: It was our weakness that he carried, our suffering that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken, as one struck by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the punishment that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, each following his own way; but the Lord laid upon him the guilt of us all.
Reader 2: Though he was harshly treated, he submitted and opened not his mouth; like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep before the shearers, he was silent and uttered no cry. When he was cut off from the land of the living, and smitten for the sin of his people, a grave was assigned him among the wicked and a burial place with evildoers, though he had done no wrong nor spoken any falsehood.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus Christ, you shared in our weaknesses and accepted our guilt. Grant us the favor of rejoicing over our human weaknesses, so that in all we do, your strength, dwelling in us, may be shown to all others.
Amen.
All sing:
May we feel no bitter hatred,
When we too are persecuted,
Left alone to walk with you.
Eighth Station
Leader: The Eighth Station: Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem.
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: There was following Jesus a great crowd of people, and among them were some women who were bewailing and lamenting him. Jesus turning to them said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.”
Reader 2: Come, all you who pass by the way, look and see whether there is any suffering like my suffering, suffering with which the Lord has afflicted me on the day of his blazing wrath. At this I weep, my eyes run with tears: far from me are all who could console me, far away are any who might revive me.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Beloved Jesus, with tears of pity these women of Jerusalem responded to you, broken, bruised, and beaten, on the road to Calvary. Deepen our faith, we beg you, so that we may see you in our brothers and sisters, bruised by our envy, beaten down by injustice, and broken by our greed and our indifference.
Amen.
All sing:
May our sympathy for Jesus
Turn to those who here now need us,
May we see Christ bruised in them.
Ninth Station
Leader: The Ninth Station: Jesus falls a third time
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: I lie prostrate in the dust; give me life according to your word. I declared my ways, and you answered me; teach me your commands. Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous deeds. My soul weeps for sorrow; strengthen me with your words.
Reader 2: The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The Lord is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid? When evildoers come at me to devour my flesh, my foes and my enemies themselves stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart will not fear; though war be waged upon me, even then will I trust.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Almighty and eternal God, you permitted your Son to be weakened, crushed, and profaned so that he might rise from the dead, freed from the ravages of sin. Help us to accept our weaknesses and failings as forerunners of our glorious resurrection in union with your Son.
Amen.
All sing:
Jesus fell again in weakness
Stumbling as we do, to lead us
Through our sorrow and our pain.
Tenth Station
Leader: The Tenth Station: Jesus is stripped of his clothes
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: They gave Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall; but when he had tasted it, he would not drink. Then after they had crucified him, they divided his clothes, casting lots, to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet, “They divided my clothes among them, and upon my garments they cast lots.”
Reader 2: Happy is the man whom God chastises! Do not reject the punishment of the almighty. For he wounds, but he binds up; he smites, but his hands give healing. Insult has broken my heart, and I am weak; I looked for comforters, and I found none. Rather they put gall in my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus Christ, stripped of everything, you stood exposed to the jeers and contempt of the people whom you loved. Clothe us with genuine love of others, so that nothing we suffer may ever fill our hearts with hatred or bitterness.
Amen.
All sing:
Stripped and jeered by his own nation,
Jesus stood in desolation,
Giving all he had to give.
Eleventh Station
Leader: The Eleventh Station: Jesus is nailed to the cross
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: When they came to Golgotha, the place called the Skull, they crucified Jesus and the robbers, one on his right and the other on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
Reader 2: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me, far from my prayer, far from the words of my cry? O my God, I cry out by day, and you answer not; I cry out by night, and there is no relief for me. All my bones are racked. My heart has become like wax melting away within my chest. My throat is dried up like baked clay, my tongue cleaves to my jaws; they have pierced my hands and my feet; I can count all my bones.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord and Savior, you told us that we too must accept crucifixion if we are to accept resurrection with you. Help us to rejoice in the sufferings that come with the fulfillment of our daily duties, seeing in them the royal road of the cross to the resurrection.
Amen.
All sing:
Pierced the hands that blessed and cured us,
Pierced the feet that walked to free us,
Walked the hill of Calvary.
Twelfth Station
Leader: The Twelfth Station: Jesus dies of the cross.
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the curtain of the temple was torn in the middle. Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, “It is finished. Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Then, bowing his head, he died.
[All bow and pause for a few moments.]
Reader 2: My people, what have I done to you? Or in what have I offended you? Answer me. What more should I have done, and did not do? I led you out of the land of Egypt, and you prepared a cross for me. I opened the Red Sea before you, and you opened my side with a lance. I gave you a royal scepter, and you have given me a crown of thorns. With great power I lifted you up, and you have hung me upon a cross. My people, what have I done to you, or in what have I offended you? Answer me.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
All sing:
Life eternal, death defiant,
Bowed his head—the world was silent,
Through his death came life anew.
Thirteenth Station
Leader: The Thirteenth Station: The body of Jesus is taken down from the cross
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: When the soldiers came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead so that they did not break his legs, but one of them opened his side with a lance, and immediately there came out blood and water. Joseph of Arimathea, because he was a disciple of Jesus (although a secret one for fear of the Jews), besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave permission.
Reader 2: O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them, and I will bring you back to your land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord, O my people! I will put my spirit in you that you may live. You shall know then that I am the Lord. I have promised it, and I will do it, says the Lord.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord, you returned to the Father all that he had given you, so that he might restore all to you a hundred‐fold in the resurrection. Help us, we beg you, to give generously of ourselves in all that we do for you, so that, like you, we might be made perfect in a new resurrection.
Amen.
All sing:
Savior, when my life shall leave me,
Through your mother’s prayers receive me
With the fruits of victory.
Fourteenth Station
Leader: The Fourteenth Station: Jesus is laid in the tomb
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect.]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: Joseph of Arimathea took the body of Jesus, and wrapping it in a clean linen cloth he laid it in his new tomb, which he had hewn out of rock. Then he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and departed.
Reader 2: I will praise you, O Lord, for you drew me clear and did not let my enemies rejoice over me. O Lord, my God, I cried out to you and you healed me. O Lord, you brought me up from the lower world; you preserved me from among those going down into the pit. Sing praise to the Lord, you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger lasts but a moment; his good will is for a lifetime. At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with dawn comes rejoicing.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Almighty and eternal God, on the edge of sadness, when all seemed lost, you restored to us the Savior we thought defeated and conquered. Help us, we beg you, to empty ourselves of self-concern, that we might see your hand in every failure and your victory in every defeat. These things we ask in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
All sing:
Jesus, Lord, your gift accepted,
In three days you resurrected,
Lead us home to be with you.
Concluding prayer
Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, your passion and death is the sacrifice that unites earth and heaven and reconciles all people to you. May we who have faithfully reflected on these mysteries follow in your steps and so come to share your glory in heaven where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit God, for ever and ever.
All: Amen.

Scriptural Way of the Cross
Introduction
Leader: During Holy Week in 1991, Pope John Paul II celebrated the Way of the Cross at the Coliseum in Rome. During that celebration, the Holy Father omitted some of the traditional Stations and added others so that each station was based in Scripture. He believed the faithful would better be led to the profound reality of these events in Christ’s life. Tonight we repeat these Stations of the Cross based upon Scripture. Please note that some of the traditional Stations of the Cross have been altered.
Opening Prayer
All: O great and loving Divine Spirit, prepare our hearts now to walk with Jesus on the Way of the Cross. Enlighten us in these moments of prayer to see you more clearly and to see our profound need for your love in our lives today. Guide our thoughts as we pray that we might pay attention to those secret parts of ourselves where darkness still dwells and where we allow it to do so. Bless us with the grace of inner vision so we may see you among us, and seeing you, may open our hearts to you. We pray for these gifts and we receive them in gratitude.
Amen.
First Station
Leader: The First Station: Jesus prays in the Garden of Olives
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: A reading from the Gospel of Luke.
Then he went out and made his way, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place he said to them, “Pray that you may not be put to the test.” He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, then went down on his knees and prayed in these words: “Father, if it is your will, take this cup from me; yet not my will but yours be done.” An angel then appeared to him from heaven to strengthen him. In his anguish, he prayed with all the greater intensity, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. Then he rose from prayer and came to his disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted with grief. He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Wake up, and pray that you may not be subjected to the trial.”
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Help us realize, O God, that Jesus dreaded his death, just as we dread the dying of our everyday lives. Be with us now as we make the commitment again to embrace the difficult aspects of our life and, with your power, to pass through them to new life.
All sing:
At the cross her station keeping,
Mary stood in sorrow, weeping,
When her Son was crucified.
Second Station
Leader: The Second Station: Jesus is betrayed by Judas
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 2: A reading from the Gospel of Matthew.
Finally, he returned to his disciples and said to them: “Sleep on now. Enjoy your rest! The hour is on us when the Son of Man is to be handed over to the power of evil men. Get up! Let us be on our way! See, my betrayer is here.” While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived accompanied by a great crowd with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the chief priests and elders of the people. His betrayer had arranged to give them a signal, saying, “The man I shall embrace is the one; take hold of him.” He immediately went over to Jesus, said to him, “Peace, Rabbi,” and embraced him.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: O God, may we take your promises seriously and keep them in mind at every turn, whenever we are tested by temptation, weakness, suffering, or discouragement. Grant, through your grace, that we will not betray you through willful sin.
All sing:
While she waited in her anguish,
Seeing Christ in torment languish,
Bitter sorrow pierced her heart.
Third Station
Leader: The Third Station: Jesus is condemned to death by the Sanhedrin
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: A reading from the Gospel of Mark.
Many spoke against him falsely under oath but their testimony did not agree. But Jesus remained silent; he made no reply. Once again the high priest interrogated him: “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” Then Jesus answered: “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” At that, the high priest tore his robes and said: “What further need do we have of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What is your verdict?” They all concurred in the verdict “guilty,” with its sentence of death.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: O God, we are sometimes so reluctant to admit that we are also part of Christ, part of the Blessed One. Take away the fear that we will be condemned as Jesus was. Help us not be ashamed to claim Christ as our own.
All sing:
With what pain and desolation,
With what noble resignation,
Mary watched her dying Son.
Fourth Station
Leader: The Fourth Station: Jesus is denied by Peter
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 2: A reading from the Gospel of Luke.
They led him away under arrest and brought him to the house of the high priest, while Peter followed at a distance. Later they lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and were sitting beside it, and Peter sat among them. A servant girl saw him sitting in the light of the fire. She gazed at him intently, then said, “This man, too, was with him.” But Peter said, “Woman, I do not know him!” A short while later someone else saw him and said, “You too are one of them”; but Peter answered, “My friend, I am not.” About an hour after that another spoke more insistently: “This man was certainly with him, for he is a Galilean.” Peter responded, “My friend, I do not know what you are talking about.” At the very moment he was saying this, a cock crowed. The Lord turned around and looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the word that the Lord had spoken to him, “Before the cock crows today you will deny me three times.” He went out and wept bitterly.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: O God, you will never deny us, though we often deny you in our words and in our actions. Help us to stand firm in our love for you and your people, through trial and adversity.
All sing:
Ever patient in her yearning,
Though her tear-filled eyes were burning
Mary gazed upon her Son.
Fifth Station
Leader: The Fifth Station: Jesus is judged by Pilate
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: A reading from the Gospel of Luke.
Pilate addressed them again, for he wanted Jesus to be the one he released. But they shouted back, “Crucify him, crucify him!” He said to them for the third time, “What wrong is this man guilty of? I have not discovered anything about him that calls for the death penalty. I will therefore chastise him and release him.” But they demanded with loud cries that he be crucified, and their shouts increased in violence. Pilate then decreed that what they demanded should be done. He released the one they asked for, who had been thrown in prison for insurrection and murder, and delivered Jesus up to their wishes.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: O God of infinite goodness and love, we pray for insight so we can see the ways in which we ourselves have delivered divine hope for the world up to the powers of darkness. We now take all that is not loving within us, and among us, and offer it to you, so it can be transformed into the energy of your Son. We pray for the grace of humility to accept your love through whomever you send it.
All sing:
Who, that sorrow contemplating,
On that passion meditating,
Would not share the Virgin’s grief?
Sixth Station
Leader: The Sixth Station: Jesus is flogged and crowned with thorns
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 2: A reading from the Gospel of John.
Pilate’s next move was to take Jesus and have him scourged. The soldiers then wove a crown of thorns and fixed it on his head, throwing around his shoulders a cloak of royal purple. Repeatedly they came up to him and said, “All hail, king of the Jews!”, slapping his face as they did so.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord, help us to judge our motives and actions rightly. Lead us to ask, in any situation in which we find ourselves, “Am I scourging you or crowning you with thorns by a willful act or refusal to act?”
All sing:
Christ she saw, for our salvation,
Scourged with cruel acclamation,
Bruised and beaten by the rod.
Seventh Station
Leader: The Seventh Station: Jesus carries his cross
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: A reading from the Gospel of John.
Jesus was led away, and carrying the cross by himself, went out to what is called the Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha).
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Father, our sins are the spiritual way of the cross that Jesus bore. He bore it so that we need not. May your grace lead us to confess our sins, and be relieved of the burden we can never carry alone.
All sing:
Christ she saw with life-blood failing,
All her anguish unavailing,
Saw him breathe his very last.
Eighth Station
Leader: The Eighth Station: Jesus is helped by Simon of Cyrene
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 2: A reading from the Gospel of Mark.
When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him. A man named Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was coming in from the fields, and they pressed him to service to carry the cross.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: So often, Father, this is how you act in our lives, showering great graces upon us in the disguise of shame, suffering, or failure. May we form the habit of looking upon all things as graces, and begin to recognize how truly blessed we are!
All sing:
Mary, fount of love’s devotion,
Let me share with true emotion
All the sorry you endured.
Ninth Station
Leader: The Ninth Station: Jesus encounters the women of Jerusalem
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: A reading from the Gospel of Luke.
A crowd of people followed him, including women who beat their breasts and lamented over him. Jesus turned to them and said: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep for yourselves and for your children. The days are coming when they will say, ‘Happy are the sterile, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.’ Then they will begin saying to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ If they do these things in the green wood, what will happen in the dry?”
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, you call us to repentance and discipleship today, especially as we celebrate the Way of the Cross. Grant that this passage from station to station may lead us to proclaim, by word and example, your saving Gospel.
All sing:
Virgin, ever interceding,
Hear me in my fervent pleading:
Fire me with your love of Christ.
Tenth Station
Leader: The Tenth Station: Jesus is crucified
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 2: A reading from the Gospel of Mark.
When they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull), they tried to give him wine drugged with myrrh, but he would not take it. Then they crucified him and divided up his garments by rolling dice for them to see what each should take. It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription proclaiming his offense read, “THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Father, you permitted this evil because you foresaw the infinite good that would come from it, fulfilling Job’s prophetic comment about his own sufferings. It is the perfect example of how we are to view our sufferings. Through the veil of Jesus’ tortured flesh, may we see how, through our trials, we share in the obedience of Jesus, and in his great work of salvation.
All sing:
Virgin, ever interceding,
Hear me in my fervent pleading:
Fire me with your love of Christ.
Eleventh Station
Leader: The Eleventh Station: Jesus promises to share his reign with the good thief
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: A reading from the Gospel of John.
One of the criminals hanging in crucifixion blasphemed him: “Are you the Messiah? Then save yourself and us.” But the other rebuked him: “Have you no fear of God, seeing you are under the same sentence? We deserve it, after all. We are only paying the price for what we’ve done, but this man has done nothing wrong.” He then said, “Jesus, remember me when you enter upon your reign.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you: this day you will be with me in paradise.”
Leader: Let us pray:
All: God, we know that you are with us and that you behold all we do and say. Now grant that, by the light of your Holy Spirit, we might be earnest as we search for truth, and fair in our judgments of others.
All sing:
At the cross, your sorrow sharing,
All your grief and torment bearing,
Let me stand and mourn with you.
Twelfth Station
Leader: The Twelfth Station: Jesus is on the cross with His mother and disciple below
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 2: A reading from the Gospel of John.
Near the cross of Jesus there stood his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. Seeing his mother there with the disciple whom he loved, Jesus said to his mother, “Woman, this is your son.” In turn, he said to the disciple, “There is your mother.” From that hour onward, the disciple took her into his care.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, it was with profound love that you provided for your mother by putting her into the care of your beloved disciple. May we remember that it was with an even more profound love that you provided for our spiritual well-being by putting us into the care of your most holy Mother.
All sing:
Fairest maid of all creation,
Queen of hope and consolation,
Let me feel your grief sublime.
Thirteenth Station
Leader: The Thirteenth Station: Jesus dies on the cross
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: A reading from the Gospel of Matthew.
From noon onward, there was darkness over the whole land until midafternoon. Then toward midafternoon, Jesus cried with a loud tone, “Eli, Eli, lema Sabachthani?” “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” This made some of the bystanders who heard it remark, “He is invoking Elijah!” Immediately one of them ran off and got a sponge. He soaked it in cheap wine, and sticking it on a reed, he tried to make him drink. Meanwhile, the rest said, “Leave him alone. Let’s see whether Elijah comes to his rescue.” Once again Jesus cried out in a loud voice, and then gave up his spirit.
[Pause in silence]
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Your last breath, Lord Jesus, has been an endless breath. It whispers upon our souls when we are baptized and confirmed, and in all the teaching and sanctifying actions of the Church. It whispers at this very moment in our hearts as we fall silent to ponder this sad and wonderful moment.
All sing:
Virgin, in your love, befriend me,
At the Judgment Day defend me.
Help me by your constant prayer.
Fourteenth Station
Leader: The Fourteenth Station: Jesus is placed in the tomb
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 2: A reading from the Gospel of Matthew.
When evening fell, a wealthy man from Arimathea arrived, Joseph by name. He was another of Jesus’ disciples and had gone to request the body of Jesus. Thereupon Pilate issued an order for its release. Taking the body, Joseph wrapped it in fresh linen and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn from a formation of rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance of the tomb and went away. But Mary Magdalene and the other Mary remained sitting there, facing the tomb.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, as we contemplate your death and sorrow, help us to see as precious the death of your beloved poor. May we accept, with love, every opportunity to care for you through them, showing them the respect and compassion that the holy women showed you.
All sing:
Savior, when my life shall leave me,
Through your mother’s prayers receive me
With the fruits of victory.
Concluding Prayer
Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, your passion and death is the sacrifice that unites earth and heaven and reconciles all people to you. May we who have faithfully reflected on these mysteries follow in your steps and so come to share your glory in heaven where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit one God, for ever and ever.
All: Amen.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
For he has remembered his promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers,
To Abraham and to his children forever.
U: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
They would have arrested Jesus
but they feared the people who regarded him as a prophet.
Blessing and Dismissal
Marian Way of the Cross
Opening Prayer
Leader: Mary stood by her Son throughout His passion and, in her faith, experienced the joy of His resurrection. Tonight’s station of the cross attempts to enkindle a sense of both powerful repentance and grateful redemption as we walk Jesus’ last steps with His Mother. To feel with her the “sword of sorrow,” the confusion, the feelings of helplessness, as well as her ever-present faith, will hopefully lead us to an experience of redemption and conversion.
Reader 1: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. For He has looked with favor on His lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.
First Station
Leader: The First Station: Jesus is condemned to die
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: It was early Friday morning when I saw my son. That was the first glimpse I had of him since they took him away. His bruised and bleeding skin sent a sword of pain deep into my heart and tears down my cheeks. Then Pilate, from his chair of judgment, asked the crowd why they wanted my son executed. All around me they shouted, “Crucify him!” I wanted to plead with them to stop, but I knew this had to be. So, I stood by and cried silently.
Reader 2: Lord Jesus, it is hard for us to imagine the anguish your mother felt at your condemnation. But what about today, when we hold a grudge…? When we judge others…? Doesn’t this bring tears of anguish to both you and your mother? Forgive us, Jesus. Amen
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, you were condemned to death because of our sins. Save us from condemnation by uniting us in your passion and death. We ask this in your holy name. Amen.
All sing:
At the cross her station keeping,
Mary stood in sorrow, weeping,
When her Son was crucified.
Second Station
Leader: The Second Station: Jesus takes up his cross
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: Regaining a little strength, I walked with the crowds to the entrance of the square. A door flew open, and my son stumbled out, the guards laughing behind him. Two men dragged over a heavy wooden cross and dropped it on his shoulders. Then they shoved him down the road. My pain for him was unbearable. I wanted to take the cross from him and carry it myself. But I knew this had to be, so I walked on silently.
Reader 2: Lord Jesus, we beg you to forgive us for the many times we have added more weight to your cross by closing our eyes to the pain and loneliness of our neighbors. Forgive us for gossiping about others and for always trying to find excuses to avoid certain people who wish to talk with us. Help us to be like Mary, always seeking to lighten the crosses of others. Forgive us, Jesus. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, fill us with the same holy obedience with which you accepted your cross. Free us from all cowardice and fear. We ask this in the holy name of Jesus. Amen.
All sing:
While she waited in her anguish,
Seeing Christ in torment languish,
Bitter sorrow pierced her heart.
Third Station
Leader: The Third Station: Jesus falls the first time
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: I followed close behind my son as he stumbled toward Calvary. Nothing had ever hurt me more than to see him in such pain. I saw the cross digging into his shoulders. My heart dropped when I saw him fall, his face to the ground, the heavy cross landing squarely on his back. For a moment I thought my beloved son was dead. Now, my whole body began to tremble. Then the guards kicked him. He rose slowly and began to walk again, yet they still whipped him. I wanted to protect him with my own body. But I knew this had to be, so I walked on and wept silently.
Reader 2: Lord, how often have we seen you fall, and, unlike Mary, have left you there without concern? How often have we seen people make mistakes and laughed at them? How often do we find ourselves getting angry when someone does things differently? Mary offered you her support through your entire passion. Help us to do the same for you by the support we give to others. Have mercy on us. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, may we know God’s providence in all that befalls us. May our perseverance in suffering raise us up to new life with you.
All sing:
With what pain and desolation,
With what noble resignation,
Mary watched her dying Son.
Fourth Station
Leader: The Fourth Station: Jesus meets his grieving mother
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: I had managed to break through the crowd and was walking side by side with my son. I called to him through the shouting voices. He stopped. Our eyes met, mine full of tears of anguish, his full of pain and confusion. I felt helpless; then his eyes said to me, “Courage! There is a purpose for this.” As he stumbled on, I knew he was right. So, I followed and prayed silently.
Reader 2: Lord Jesus, forgive us the many times our eyes met, and we turned away. Forgive us the times things did not go our way and we let everyone know about it. Forgive us the times we brooded over little inconveniences or became discouraged and did not heed your call to courage! Yes, Lord, our eyes have met many times, but fruitlessly. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, from the cross you appointed Mary to be our Mother. May her love purify us to follow you as true brothers and sisters on the Way of the Cross.
All sing:
Ever patient in her yearning,
Though her tear-filled eyes were burning
Mary gazed upon her Son.
Fifth Station
Leader: The Fifth Station: Simon helps Jesus carry his cross.
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: I could now see almost complete helplessness on the face of my son as he tried to carry his heavy load. Each step looked as if it would be his last. I felt his every pain in my heart, and I wanted the whole thing to end. Then I noticed some commotion near Jesus. The guards had pulled a protesting man from the crowd. They forced him to pick up the back of the cross to help lighten my son’s load. He asked the guards why this had to be. I knew, and so followed silently.
Reader 2: Lord Jesus, we have many times refused to help you. We have been a selfish people who have often questioned your word. Do not let us remain like Simon, but help us to be like your mother, Mary, who always silently followed and obeyed. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, your cross is a gift of grace calling us to supreme goodness. Strengthen us to embrace your cross and to love the life of sacrifice.
All sing:
Who, that sorrow contemplating,
On that passion meditating,
Would not share the Virgin’s grief?
Sixth Station
Leader: The Sixth Station: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: As I continued close by Jesus, a woman pushed past the guards, took off her veil, and began to wipe my son’s sweating, bloody face. The guards immediately pulled her back. Her face seemed to say, “Why are you doing this to him?” I knew, so I walked on in faith, silently.
Reader 2: Lord, this woman gave you the best she could. On the other hand, we have wanted to take more than we give. So many opportunities arise every day for us to give to you by giving to others – but we pass them by. Our savior, never let us ask why again, but help us to give all we have to you. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, your holy face reveals the splendor of the Father. May we love your humanity and yearn for your divinity in everything we do.
All sing:
Christ, she saw, for our salvation,
Scourged with cruel acclamation,
Bruised and beaten by the rod.
Seventh Station
Leader: The Seventh Station: Jesus falls the second time
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: Again, my son fell, and again my grief was overwhelming at the thought that he might die. I started to move toward him, but the soldiers prevented me. He rose and stumbled ahead slowly. Seeing my son fall, get up again, and continue on, was bitter anguish to me. But since I knew this had to be, I walked on silently.
Reader 2: Lord, of all people Mary, was your most faithful follower, never stopping in spite of all the pain she felt for you. We have many times turned away from you by our sins and have caused others to turn away from you. We beg you to have mercy on us. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, may our experience of failure lead us more surely to you and unite us more deeply in your work of crucifying love.
All sing:
Christ, she saw with life-blood failing,
All her anguish unavailing,
Saw him breathe his very last.
Eighth Station
Leader: The Eighth Station: Jesus speaks to the women
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: I was walking a few steps behind Jesus when I saw him stop. Some women were there crying for him and pitying him. He told them not to shed tears for him. They had the opportunity to accept him as the messiah; like many others, they rejected him instead. He told them to shed tears for themselves, tears that would bring their conversion. They did not see the connection between that and his walk to death. I did, and as he walked on, I followed silently.
Reader 2: Our Savior, many times have we acted like these women, always seeing the faults of others and pitying them. Yet very rarely have we seen our own sinfulness and asked your pardon. Lord, you have taught us through these women. Forgive us, Lord, for our blindness. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, in the midst of your agony you fill us with consolation. May our tears be turned to joy through the tenderness of your mercy.
All sing:
Mary, fount of love’s devotion,
Let me share with true emotion
All the sorrow you endured
Ninth Station
Leader: The Ninth Station: Jesus falls a third time
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: This fall of Jesus was agony to me. Not only had he fallen on the rocky ground again, but now he was almost at the top of the hill of crucifixion. The soldiers screamed at him and abused him, almost dragging him the last few steps. My heart pounded as I imagined what they would do to him next. But I knew this had to be, so I climbed the hill silently behind him.
Reader 2: Our loving Jesus, we know that many times we have offered our hands to help people but when it became inconvenient or painful to us, we left them, making excuses. Help us, Lord, to be like your mother, Mary, and never take our supporting hands away from those who need them. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, save us from every temptation to despair. Detach us from all selfishness and pride, for you alone are our hope.
All sing:
Virgin, ever interceding,
Hear me in my fervent pleading:
Fire me with your love of Christ.
Tenth Station
Leader: The Tenth Station: Jesus is stripped of his garments
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: With my son finally relieved of the weight of the cross, I thought he would have a chance to rest. But the guards immediately started to rip his clothes off his blood-clotted skin. The sight of my son in such pain was unbearable. Yet, since I knew this had to be, I stood by and cried silently.
Reader 2: Lord, in our own way we too have stripped you. We have taken away the good name of another by foolish talk and have stripped people of human dignity by our prejudice. Jesus, there are so many ways we have offended you through the hurt we have caused others. Help us to see you in all people. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, bless us with the grace of self-knowledge to know our sins, in all their horror, never making excuses for them, but remaining always confident in your mercy.
All sing:
Mother, may this prayer be granted:
That Christ’s love may be implanted.
In the depths of my poor soul.
Eleventh Station
Leader: The Eleventh Station: Jesus is nailed to the cross
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: As they threw Jesus on the cross, he willingly allowed himself to be nailed. As they punctured his hands and his feet, I felt the pain in my heart. Then they lifted up the cross. There he was, my son, whom I love so much, being scorned as he struggled for the last few moments of earthly life. But I knew this had to be, so I stood by and prayed silently.
Reader 2: Lord, what pain you endured for us. And what pain your mother went through, seeing her only son die for love of us! Yet, both you and she are ready to forgive us as soon as we repent of our sin. Help us, Lord, to turn away from our sinfulness. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, pierce our hard hearts so that we will not be shackled by our wounds, but rather lavish in our worship of you.
All sing:
At the cross, your sorrow sharing,
All your grief and torment bearing,
Let me stand and mourn with you.
Twelfth Station
Leader: The Twelfth Station: Jesus dies on the cross
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: What greater pain is there for a mother than to see her son die right before her eyes! I, who had brought this savior into the world and watched him grow, stood helplessly beneath his cross as he lowered his head and died. His earthly anguish was finished, but mine was greater than ever. Yet, this had to be, and I had to accept it, so I stood by and I mourned silently.
Reader 2: Our Jesus, have mercy on us for what our sins have done to you and to others. We thank you for your great act of love. You have said that true love is laying down your life for your friends. Let us always be your friend. Teach us to live our lives for others, and not fail you again. Amen.
[All bow and pause for a few moments.]
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, we have no life but through your death. We love you, Lord Jesus. Forgive us who are so undeserving of your love. Restore us to your friendship, for you alone are the only real joy of every human heart.
All sing:
Fairest maid of all creation,
Queen of hope and consolation,
Let me feel your grief sublime.
Thirteenth Station
Leader: The Thirteenth Station: Jesus is taken from the cross
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: The crowd had gone; the noise had stopped. I stood quietly with one of Jesus’ friends and looked up at the dead body of our savior, my son. Then two men took the body from the cross and placed it in my arms. A deep sorrow engulfed my being. Yet, I also felt deep joy. Life had ended cruelly for my son, but it had also brought life to all of us. I knew this had to be, and I prayed silently.
Reader 2: Lord, your passion has ended. Yet, it still goes on whenever we choose sin over you. We have done our part in your crucifixion and now, our savior, we beg your forgiveness with all our heart. Help us to live a life worthy of you and your mother. Amen
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, even in death your sacred body remains the sacrament of our salvation. May we remain close to you in your death by zealously preserving the dignity of all human life.
All sing:
Virgin, in your love, befriend me,
At the Judgment Day defend me.
Help me by your constant prayer.
Fourteenth Station
Leader: The Fourteenth Station: Jesus is placed in the tomb
Leader: We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
[Genuflect]
All: Because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
Reader 1: We brought Jesus’ body to a tomb and I arranged it there myself, silently weeping, silently rejoicing. I took one more look at my loving son, and then walked out. They closed the tomb and before I left, I thought, I knew this had to be… it had to be for you! I would wait in faith silently.
Reader 2: Yes, our Lord, this had to be because you love us, and for no other reason. All you ask is that we live a good life. You never said such a life would be easy. We are willing to leave sin behind and live for you alone, with our brothers and sisters. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, in this moment of the most profound loneliness in the history of the world, fill us with the hope that keeps us vigilant at your tomb, adoring your presence in each other through your undying love that binds us.
All: Amen.
Mass Vespers and Stations of the Cross
Vespers for the Friday of the First Week of Lent
The psalm and canticles recitation will alternate between the presider’s side (I) and the ambo side (II). The Mass antiphons, the ending antiphons, and the Magnificat will be said in unison (U). (L) indicates Leader.
Entrance Antiphon
U: Set me free from my distress, O Lord. See my lowliness and suffering, and take away all my sins.
L: Lord, lay your healing hand upon me, for I have sinned.
Psalm 41
I: Happy the man who considers the poor and the weak.
The LORD will save him in the day of evil, will guard him, give him life, make him happy in the land and will not give him up to the will of his foes.
The LORD will help him on his bed of pain, he will bring him back from sickness to health.
II: As for me, I said: “LORD, have mercy on me; heal my soul for I have sinned against you.”
My foes are speaking evil against me.
“How long before he dies and his name be forgotten?”
I: They come to visit me and speak empty words, their hearts full of malice, they spread it abroad.
II: My enemies whisper together against me.
They all weigh up the evil which is on me: “Some deadly thing has fastened upon him, he will not rise again from where he lies.”
Thus even my friend, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has turned against me.
I: But you, O LORD, have mercy on me.
Let me rise once more and I will repay them.
By this I shall know that you are my friend, if my foes do not shout in triumph over me.
If you uphold me I shall be unharmed and set in your presence for evermore.
II: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel from age to age. Amen. Amen.
I: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
II: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
U: Lord, lay your healing hand upon me, for I have sinned.
L: The mighty Lord is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
Psalm 46
I: God is for us a refuge and strength, a helper close at hand, in time of distress: so we shall not fear though the earth should rock, though mountains fall into the depths of the sea, even though its waters rage and foam, even though the mountains be shaken by its waves.
II: The LORD of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
I: The waters of a river give joy to God’s city, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within, it cannot be shaken; God will help it at the dawning of the day.
Nations are in tumult, kingdoms are shaken: He lifts his voice, the earth shrinks away.
II: The LORD of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
I: Come, consider the works of the LORD, the redoubtable deeds he has done on earth.
He puts an end to wars over all the earth; the bow he breaks, the spear he snaps.
He burns the shields with fire.
“Be still and know that I am God, supreme among the nations, supreme on the earth!”
II: The LORD of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
I: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
II: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
U: The mighty Lord is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
L: All nations will come and worship before you, O Lord.
Canticle - Revelation 15:3-4
I: Mighty and wonderful are your works, Lord God almighty!
Righteous and true are your ways, O king of the nations.
II: Who would dare refuse you honor, Or the glory due your name, O Lord?
I: Since you alone are holy, all the nations shall come
and worship in your presence.
Your mighty deeds are clearly seen.
II: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
I: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
U: All nations will come and worship before you, O Lord.
The Mass continues as normal.
Responsorial Psalm

Communion Antiphon
U: As I live, says the Lord, I do not wish the death of the sinner, but rather that he turn back and live.
L: If you are bringing your gift to the altar, and there you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift in front of the altar; go at once and make peace with your brother, and then come back and offer your gift.
U: +My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
My spirit rejoices in God my savior
For he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
The Almighty has done great things for me,
And holy is his name.
He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
He has scattered the proud in their conceit.
Amen.
If you are bringing your gift to the altar… And then come back and offer your gift.
Blessing and Dismissal
The Catholic Social Teachings Stations of the Cross
LEADER: Holy God, be with us now as we meditate on your Son’s journey to Calvary. Remind us that still, in this present day, many of your children continue that walk to Calvary, carrying heavy, difficult crosses. May we be Simon to those whose burdens are too heavy to be borne alone. May we be Veronica to those who need the touch of love and comfort. And may we, struggling with our own crosses, always remember your promises of justice, mercy, and peace.
Amen.
FIRST STATION - JESUS IS CONDEMNED TO DEATH
LEADER: The first station, Jesus is condemned to death. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: The governor said to them in reply, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They answered, “Barabbas! … Let [Jesus] be crucified!” (Matthew 27:21–22)
READER 1: Imagine this scene, the chaos, the mayhem, people pushing and pulling at each other, screaming and shouting. A good man is about to be killed as a public spectacle, and the laws of the land stand in silence. Perhaps this scene seems far removed—something that happens in faraway countries under foreign governments. Or perhaps we’ve experienced this kind of injustice in our own lives, in our own cities, our own communities.
READER 2: Think of the last time you witnessed injustice - someone unjustly accused of wrongdoing because of the color of their skin, or people who fled their homeland to escape oppression and violence. We are called to live as one family, each of us made in the image and likeness of God, and we’re called to take action. So then, do we stand silent in the crowd, or do we shout? What do we say?
ALL: Christ Jesus, you were condemned by those you had come to serve and love. When I am tempted to condemn those around me, fill my heart with compassion and understanding.
(all sing)
At the cross her station keeping,
Mary stood in sorrow weeping
When her Son was crucified.
SECOND STATION - JESUS CARRIES THE CROSS
LEADER: The second station, Jesus carries the cross. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: And carrying the cross himself, he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull. (John 19:17)
READER 1: We all have our crosses to carry, those hidden battles we fight when we think no one is looking. How easy it is to become so focused on my battles, my problems, my cross that I forget to look at those around me. Let us help one another shoulder our burdens.
READER 2: Think of our brothers and sisters who carry the crosses of hunger and poverty, oppression and discrimination. How can we help them shoulder their burdens? Perhaps, if we truly seek the face of Christ among those whose needs are great, we will discover what it means to pick up our crosses and follow in the way of Christ.
ALL: Christ Jesus, our crosses are heavy and our bodies weak, but we want to follow you. Give us strength to continue. And although our burdens may be heavy, let us remember to stop and help others along the way.
(sing)
While she waited in her anguish,
Seeing Christ in torment languish,
Bitter sorrow pierced her heart.
THIRD STATION - JESUS FALLS FOR THE FIRST TIME
LEADER: The third station, Jesus falls for the first time. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: I am troubled now. Yet what shall I say? “Father, save me from this hour?” But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name. (John 12:27–28)
READER 1: Most of us have fallen—fallen on hard times, on difficulties in a relationship, on a moment of doubt and challenge. But these hardships are never borne in vain. All things have the potential to work together for the greater glory of God. We hold in our hearts victims of natural disasters, of violence, of oppression. How we can be messengers of peace amidst such darkness?
READER 2: God does not will that we fall but, when we inevitably do, we are each given the moment of choice to stand back up, look around, and take stock of ourselves and our lives. Where is God at work in the pain? We look to Jesus, who fell, got up, and kept walking. How can we help those we encounter do the same?
ALL: Christ Jesus, you know that each of us falls, each of us makes bad decisions, each of us gives in to temptation. Help us to remember that, with your grace, we have the opportunity to rise up stronger and wiser than before.
(sing)
With what pain and desolation,
With what noble resignation,
Mary watched her dying Son.
FOURTH STATION - JESUS ENCOUNTERS HIS MOTHER
LEADER: The fourth station, Jesus encounters his mother. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary … “You yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:34–35)
READER 1: What must Mary have been thinking, standing there in the midst of suffering, looking at her son? What pain must have been in her heart? Yet we know that she followed Christ until the end and beyond, encouraging his friends as the young Church grew. Mary’s desire to love and serve God overcame the suffering she encountered.
READER 2: How many parents watch those they love struggle and suffer as Christ did? On our own city streets, violence, addiction, and poverty rip too many young people from their families, trapping them in cycles of hopelessness that can be nearly impossible to break. War and poverty mean families are shattered, children lose their childhood, and parents are handed impossible choices. How do we help others, whether in our immediate community or in our global one? Let us look to Mary and the example she sets for us as she meets Christ carrying the cross.
ALL: Christ Jesus, in the person of our Blessed Mother, we have an example of courage, perseverance, and faith. In her own suffering, Mary desired to be with those in need. Strengthen us as we try to follow her example.
(sing)
Ever-patient in her yearning
Though her tear-filled eyes were burning,
Mary gazed upon her Son.
FIFTH STATION - SIMON HELPS JESUS CARRY THE CROSS
LEADER: The fifth station, Simon helps Jess carry the cross. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country … to carry his cross. (Mark 15:21)
READER 1: Even Jesus needed help, and he wasn’t too proud to accept it. Human beings are called to live in community. By helping one another, we build a better world. Let us never forget that we, too, are in need—and often those we serve end up serving us. Let us never be too proud to accept what others give. Help us remember that there is much to be learned from each person we encounter.
READER 2: What is our role in the crosses others carry? Our treatment of the environment and the purchases we make can contribute to or alleviate the burdens of others. How can we advocate for policies that help remove the crosses of others rather than add to them? Let us pray for the humility to both give and receive, for we never know where God might be at work.
ALL: Christ Jesus, you are God. How awesome it is that the God of the universe accepted the help of a simple human like me, and continues to desire my help in bringing about the Reign of God. Teach me humility that I may serve you worthily.
(sing)
Who, that sorrow contemplating,
On that passion meditating,
Would not share the Virgin's grief?
SIXTH STATION - VERONICA WIPES THE FACE OF JESUS
LEADER: The sixth station, Veronica wipes the face of Jesus. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace.” (Luke 8:48)
READER 1: It’s tempting for us to forget the humanity in this scene, to view it in terms of great marble statues and stained glass. But what Veronica did was hardly clean or simple. She pushed herself into the heart of suffering and struggle, into a rowdy and dangerous crowd. She threw cultural norms and taboos aside and took action, touching poverty in its rawest form. And for what? Jesus’ face was bruised and bloodied; a little cloth wasn’t going to change that. He was on his way to die.
READER 2: We, too, may be tempted to think like this when faced with the overwhelming challenge of global poverty and suffering. But we must never underestimate the value of simply being present to another human being. When we walk down our city streets, do we meet the eyes of those we pass, or do we look away? Do we share some small greeting, or do we stay silent, lost in our own world? How might Veronica’s example encourage us?
ALL: Christ Jesus, help us to remember that nothing we do for the sake of love is done in vain. May we, like Veronica, have the strength to reach out to those whom society has forgotten, and show love.
(sing)
Christ she saw, for our salvation,
Scourged with cruel acclamation,
Bruised and beaten by the rod.
SEVENTH STATION - JESUS FALLS A SECOND TIME
LEADER: The seventh station, Jesus falls a second time. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone. (John 8:7)
READER 1: It is easy to ignore those who live in poverty by assuming that their plight is of their own creation, from laziness, ignorance, or a failure to seize opportunities. But this is an easy way out. We blame someone else to distance ourselves from the real struggles of others. We see that someone has fallen, and we forget that we, too, can easily trip and find ourselves face-down in the dirt.
READER 2: It is important to reflect on the safety nets we take for granted that suspend us above poverty. Do we live in a prosperous country, in a safe neighborhood with a local grocery store? Has our family supported us financially? Do we have basic civil liberties and the freedom to move about with little trouble? Do we have health insurance when faced with an emergency? As we reflect on our safety nets, let us consider the families without them, who so easily fall into impossible situations. How are we being called to help these families?
ALL: Christ Jesus, you meet me where I am in my life with an outstretched hand rather than a thrown stone. Help me to do the same for those around me. Teach me to love my neighbor as myself.
(sing)
Christ she saw with life-blood failing,
All her anguish unavailing,
Saw him breathe his very last.
EIGHTH STATION - JESUS CONSOLES THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM
LEADER: The eighth station, Jesus consoles the women of Jerusalem. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children …” (Luke 23:28)
READER 1: Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus deeply involved with the concerns of individual people. attentive to their needs, and listening to them. How tempting it is to assume we are the experts on every situation. We see hurt and suffering on the news, and we immediately jump to our own quick fixes, opinions, and solutions.
READER 2: But Jesus points to a different path—that of dialogue. Jesus encourages us to recognize that those living within the systems of oppression and hardship are, in fact, the ones best suited to reimagine those same broken systems. Our role is to accompany them and to listen. Who, then, must we take time to listen to? Survivors of abuse? People who are ill and struggling to get health care? Victims of racism?
ALL: Christ Jesus, you always invite; you never impose. You always engage people in ways that are meaningful; you never try to pressure or manipulate. Guide us in our efforts, that we may truly serve the needs of the poor and not simply the needs of ourselves.
(sing)
Mary, fount of love's devotion,
Let me share with true emotion
All the sorrow you endured.
NINTH STATION - JESUS FALLS FOR A THIRD TIME
LEADER: The ninth station, Jesus falls for a third time. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: But his father ordered his servants, “Quickly, bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.” (Luke 15:22)
READER 1: Sometimes it may feel as though we’ve fallen one too many times, and we’re weighed down by shame and guilt. But God is not done with us; God never tires of forgiving, of showing us mercy! Failure should not keep us down. God tells us we’re forgiven and invites us to get up and be about God’s work of justice, mercy, and peace.
READER 2: Do we unintentionally use our shortcomings as excuses to not serve one another? Do we think our weaknesses make us “not good enough” to minister to others? Perhaps we do—but we can be assured that God does not. How, then, are we challenged to go into our world to love others?
ALL: Christ Jesus, we may stumble, we may fall; help us remember that what is most important is to get back up and start again.
(sing)
Virgin, ever interceding,
Hear me in my fervent pleading:
Fire me with your love of Christ.
TENTH STATION - JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS
LEADER: The tenth station, Jesus is stripped of his garments. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: For creation awaits with eager expectation … in hope that [it] would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. (Romans 8:19–21)
READER 1: People who live in poverty are stripped of food, water, and shelter daily. We see lands rich in resources, yet the people of those places live in poverty. How do we ensure that the wonders of the natural world are used in a sustainable, equitable way? As Pope Francis says in Laudato Si, “We have to realize that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.” The environment and the people that inhabit it are interconnected.
READER 2: God calls us to be stewards of the resources which we have been given, to care for one another by sharing and collaborating, rather than grabbing up everything we can get now and worrying about others later. God’s gift of creation can enable us to thrive through good soil for planting, clean air to breathe, beauty to enjoy. What conditions of poverty do we condemn people to when we destroy or mistreat this great gift?
ALL: Christ Jesus, all life comes from you. You have created a wondrous and beautiful world. May we truly value that which you have made, and in turn be good stewards of your gifts for the common good of all.
(sing)
Mother, may this prayer be granted:
That Christ's love may be implanted
In the depths of my poor soul.
ELEVENTH STATION - JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS
LEADER: The eleventh station, Jesus is nailed to the cross. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
READER 1: We’ve all been there—stuck in a seemingly impossible situation, weighed down by financial burdens, family obligations, or the judgments of others. We’ve all been nailed to the cross. And often it feels as though we will never make our way out of this bleak situation. This is a part of the human experience that all of us go through, regardless of our wealth, our nationality, or our past experiences. Jesus knows this, and never gives up on us.
READER 2: And if Jesus offers us these second, third or hundredth chances, what then should we offer to our neighbors? Jesus—despite being nailed to the cross himself—encountered the man crucified next to him as a fellow human being made in the image and likeness of God. He made no note of the man’s nationality, his class, or the color of his skin. Instead, Christ simply assured the man of God’s love. Who must I forgive? From whom must I accept forgiveness?
ALL: Christ Jesus, you are always willing to give us another chance. May we follow your example and help others come down from the crosses that bind them.
(sing)
At the cross, your sorrow sharing,
All your grief and torment bearing,
Let me stand and mourn with you.
TWELFTH STATION - JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS
LEADER: The twelfth station, Jesus dies on the cross. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Matthew 27:46) (All kneel or bow for a reflective pause, and then rise.)
READER 1: By human standards, the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus is the ultimate failure. Members of the Jewish community had waited so long for the Messiah, had put their faith and hope in a man they believed had come to liberate them, and he died a horrific death. It was a devastating, final moment, and so many of Jesus’ friends had already fled the scene, abandoning hope in a better future. It’s a good thing the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus are not to be judged by human standards. Rather, what we see as failure, God transforms into victory. Where we see nothing but hopelessness and devastation, God is at work in surprising and spectacular ways.
READER 2: When we think of the hardships so many in our world face, we might easily grow discouraged; but God offers us hope and wants all of us to work together to build a world of peace and justice. How does God want us to look upon poverty, violence, and environmental decay—by human standards, or by something more hopeful? As we reflect on the death of Jesus, let us be particularly mindful of those who are on death row, of the families and friends of those whose lives were ended by violent crime or by the death penalty, and of all those communities around the world who live in fear of state-sponsored violence.
ALL: Christ Jesus, even in the most devastating failures, you show us the importance of hope. May we have the courage to work patiently and tirelessly with those in need, always keeping our sights on you.
(sing)
Fairest maid of all creation,
Queen of hope and consolation,
Let me feel your grief sublime.
THIRTEENTH STATION - JESUS’ BODY IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSS
LEADER: The thirteenth station, Jesus’ body is taken down from the cross. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.” (Luke 22:19)
READER 1: As we contemplate Jesus’ broken body, we are reminded of his full humanity. He had a body, just as we all do, and he suffered physically. Jesus challenges us to examine the real bodily needs of those around us, the neighbors we pass on city streets and hear about on the news. Do these neighbors of ours have access to the most basic forms of sustenance, to healthy, nutritious food and clean, reliable water? How are we called to show love to those who suffer frailty of body and mind?
READER 2: We are reminded, too, of the Eucharist, through which we share in Jesus’ body and blood. In experiencing the Eucharist, we have an opportunity to put our own needs aside and reflect on our oneness as the Body of Christ.
ALL: Christ Jesus, you offer us yourself in the Eucharist and invite us to offer ourselves to you and to your global family. May we learn to put the needs of others ahead of our own so we can better love our neighbor.
(sing)
Virgin, in your love befriend me,
At the Judgment Day defend me.
Help me by your constant prayer.
FOURTEENTH STATION - JESUS’ BODY IS PLACED IN A TOMB
LEADER: The fourteenth station, Jesus’ body is placed in a tomb. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
ALL: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
LEADER: Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory? (Luke 24:26)
READER 1: We know how the story ends. We know that after three days, God’s victory shines forth; Christ triumphs over sin, evil and death. And yet how long were those three days for the men and women who lived through them? They didn’t know that the story would end in triumph. How many of us are currently living in our own “three days”—a dark period with seemingly no end in sight? Are we quick to throw in the towel, to say that our efforts to make the world a better place are in vain and hopeless?
READER 2: The mystery of our faith says that Christ wins, darkness ends. The seeds we plant today will bear fruit tomorrow. Our efforts to love are never wasted.
ALL: Christ Jesus, as we contemplate all that remains to be done to build a just and loving world, remind us that our work may be incomplete, “but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest.”
(sing)Savior, when my life shall leave me,
Through your mother's prayers receive me
With the fruits of victory.
CLOSING PRAYER
LEADER: Christ Jesus, we have walked the way of the cross with you. We have seen your sorrows and sufferings and have experienced the hope and joy that a single moment of love can give. We know that your human family encompasses every one of us—from communities in distant parts of the globe to our own cities. All over our world, you are at work. And you call us to work as well. As we continue our journeys, we ask that you bless our efforts to love and serve one another.
ALL: Amen

All: Amen.

All: Amen.
Scriptural Stations of the Cross
All sing: At the cross her station keeping,
Mary stood in sorrow, weeping,
When her Son was crucified.
All: Amen.
All: Amen.

Blessing and Dismissal
Scriptural Stations of the Cross
All sing: At the cross her station keeping,
Mary stood in sorrow, weeping,
When her Son was crucified.
L: Mary the mother of Jesus was betrothed to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Mass continues as normal.

Amen.
If you are bringing your gift to the altar… And then come back and offer your gift.
Blessing and Dismissal
All: Amen.
